Designing a Beautiful and Hard-working CRM

The new RightNow Media had so many moving parts that we could no longer use an out-of-the-box CRM to manage content. I was tasked with designing a brand-new custom CRM from scratch. One of the most exciting challenges to me is making a conventionally ugly web tool into something that people love looking at and using.

I wanted to create the optimal writing and admin environment that someone could use for hours without destroying their retinas.

We named it Curator. It wasn't just a repository to store video files and images, but it had to feature a robust editing platform for writers and content makers in-house. The most challenging part of the design was to surface the right information for the most people. I had to declutter (check out the checklist) while giving content makers the quickest access to common actions and stats.

I used a darker color palette inspired by the dark mode I've seen developers use in their text editors. I wanted to create the optimal writing and admin environment that someone could use for hours without destroying their retinas. RightNow Media has now transitioned fully over to an early version of Curator internally. The writers tell me they love it.  😎
